In November 2017, shortly after the appearance of the so-called Paradise Papers, the machine manufacturer Gauselmann, to which Merkur belongs, instructed its licensees to no longer offer all Merkur machines in Canada.
According to Gauselmann, this is in no way related to the Paradise Papers and the revelations in them, but is solely a reaction to the extremely vague legislation in Canada.
Merkur had been offering its slots for years through a subsidiary based on the Isle of Man. A secret was never made of this, but according to the Paradise Papers, Gauselmann was twisted into a rope.
Allegations that the subsidiary on the Isle of Man was solely aimed at tax relief were sharply rejected by Gauselmann. In fact, such a step is necessary in order to be able to license online slots across Europe. According to Gauselmann, it would therefore be necessary to finally adapt the case law in Canada with regard to online casinos to the EU standard in order to avoid such accusations from the outset.
New Merkur machines under a new roof
